EL SALVADOR EXTENSION

Often overlooked, El Salvador is a beautiful country with a lot to discover. The civil war ended in 1992 and tourism has been slow to develop but for the adventurous traveller, El Salvador offers volcanoes, faded colonial cities, coffee plantations, cloudforest, and an undeveloped coastline, where there is world-class surfing.
An ideal introduction to El Salvador is to add a 3-night extension from Nicaragua, Costa Rica or Guatemala. You will be based in a clean and friendly hotel in San Salvador on a half board basis.
Day 1 - San Salvador
Fly into San Salvador and transfer to your hotel.

Morning drive up to the Cerro Verde National Park. Literally meaning Green Mountain, the park was closed for two years after the violent earthquakes that shook the country in 2001. This gave its rich and varied flora and fauna a chance to recover from human interference. The road up to the park is lined with beautiful flowers and offers fantastic views as it climbs the ridge above Lago Coatepeque.
At the top, you are rewarded with a stunning vista of the smouldering hulk of Izalco Volcano. A 30-minute walk along the nature trail in the park leads to viewpoints of Santa Ana Volcano – the highest point in El Salvador. Afternoon visit to Santa Ana, a coffee town which makes the most of the rich volcanic soil in El Salvador.

Firstly visit Ilobasco, famed for its miniature ceramics, then continue to San Sebastián to visit the workshops and stores selling typical weavings. Finally visit Suchitoto, a quiet colonial town, renowned as being the cultural capital of the country. This is a lovely place to relax and stroll the quiet cobbled streets.
